NZ HOSTS FINA Coaching Clinic

SSNZ hosts internationally renowned Leilani Torres for coaching clinic.

At the beginning of the year - SSNZ was fortunate to host Leilani Torres in Tauranga for a FINA Coaching Clinic. The Clinic was attended by coaches from all over New Zealand, and even some from Australia and New Caledonia.

Torres, who hails from Puerto Rico, is an ex-Olympian synchronised swimmer and is now based in Chile. The Coaching Clinic was focused on reinforcing the 'coaching of basic skills' - and was hands-on with athletes from the Tauranga and Central Synchro clubs volunteering to be "coached" for the duration of the clinic. Feedback from the attending coaches was positive with many appreciating the range of drills and techniques shared by Torres. North Harbour Coach, Katie McDOugall, said " I found Leilani's passion for coaching very inspiring. I gained a lot of technical knowledge for specific sculls, positions and drills for certain elements and age group figures. I also learned more about how to balance training and fun, routines and figures, when planning and implementing for training across groups of multiple ages."

SSNZ Chair, Shirley Hooper, says " Being able to support our coaches and facilitate their professional development is a major focus for the SSNZ Board. We were delighted to host this clinic and plan to continue finding ways to keep our coaches inspired and up to date. Coaches from any sport can make a big difference to young people and help them develop important lifeskills. "

SSNZ would like to thank FINA, Olympic Solidarity Fund, and Sport New Zealand for their support in hosting this clinic.
